Match Report: An entertaining match at Parc y Mynydd Mawr saw the home side victorious by a comfortable margin but they did not have it all their own way. Ammanford started brightly with the wind behind them to gain an early six point lead through two penalties. Tumble broke upfield and a flowing backs move saw full back Owain Jones cross wide out on the right. Ill discipline from the visitors gifted outside half Daniel Griffiths an easy three points to put the Magpies ahead. Ammanford used the Garryowen with the wind at their backs but most crosskicks made their way into the safe hands of left wing Alex Rees who dealt with them admirably. In a ding dong first period the home pack drove well for scrum half Mathew Gibson to cross for an unconverted try. Ammanford struck back just before half time with a well executed try although the Tumble tackling was poor. This converted score saw the teams tied at 13 all at the interval. At half time the Magpies brought on no.8 Rhys Jones and second row Sam Davies and moved skipper Ricky Guest to his usual hooking berth and this ensured a vast improvement up front. The firm platform established by the forwards in the second period paved the way for a handsome victory. Constant driving by the pack with Ricky Guest, Rhydian Jones, Aled Lewis and Rhys Jones to the fore, created space out wide for full back Jones to cross for his second. Pressure from the Magpies? forwards paid dividends with hooker Guest and no.8 Jones crossing for powerful close range tries. A tremendous individual score followed by hard running wing Tomos Rees and Owain Jones completed a hat trick on the night. Griffiths converted three of these scores as the hosts coasted home. A slow start by the Magpies illustrating a lack of training but a satisfactory result overall. -- Gwyn |
