Match Report: It was a miracle this game was played at all in soaking conditions on an extremely heavy field but credit to both teams and referee for ensuring the fixture was fulfilled. Tumble started strongly and a passing movement saw wing Tomos Rees cross under the posts for a try converted by Daniel Griffiths. The writing was on the wall for a gallant Cefen side when Rees crossed for his second score which went unconverted. Captain Ricky Guest, playing out of position in the back row, crashed over for the third try, converted again by Griffiths. The stronger Tumble eight took an early scrum against the head but the conditions underfoot forced the referee to continue with uncontested scrums to ensure the safety of two young sides. Tumble dominated possession but spilled the ball far too often allowing Cefen to finish the half brightly. Early in the second half Keenan Jones, playing at no.8, peeled away from a driving lineout to score wide out and Griffiths kicked a lovely conversion in the mud. The second half followed a similar pattern to the first and an inter passing breakaway saw centre James Hunt score an unconverted try. Hunt was injured in the process and had to leave the field enforcing further positional changes for the Magpies. Skipper Guest fancied himself as a centre come outside half ! Daniel Wood won consistent lineout ball and from a forward drive Tomos Wyn forced his way over the tryline for another score converted by Griffiths. The scoring was completed by fly half Griffiths bringing his tally to 13 points for the afternoon – it is a shame that he is lost to soccer on most Saturdays. Tumble only had 1 of their 6 regional players available and although boasting a strong squad the Magpies had only 17 players available for this fixture, this must be rectified to ensure further success. Training nights have been switched to Tuesday at 7.00pm in an effort to accommodate everybody. -- Gwyn |
