Match Report: An entertaining encounter saw the visitors open the scoring when Owen Pullman picked up a loose ball at the front of an attacking lineout to cross wide out to give Foel an ideal start. This only served as a wake up call to the talented Magpies however and a strong forward drive saw prop Tomos Wyn crossing for an unconverted try. A second try followed after a strong lineout drive by the home forwards saw the backs dummy and switch to full back Mathew Gibson for a first class score. Felinfoel tried hard to strike back but second row Haydn Pugh, dominating the lineouts again, ran hard for his first try. Strong set pieces enabled the young Magpies to dominate possession and from a spun ball Mathew Lemon crossed wide on the right and converted his own try. Aled Lewis impressed with his strong ball carrying although playing out of position at inside centre and his excellent support play saw him cross for the fifth try following a sizzling break by Lemon. Pugh was rewarded for his hard work with a second try which was astoundingly converted by hooker Ricky Guest. Both sides had contributed to an excellent first half but a strange penalty count against the home youngsters ensured they only scored one try in the second half through burrowing prop Keenan Jones. Scrums, rucks and mauls were continuously penalised mysteriously, stifling the game. Felinfoel fought bravely in the last quarter but praise must be given to the Magpies’ defence who repelled endless short penalties to keep the Foel at bay, putting bodies on the line, none more so than Sam Davies, James Evans and skipper Guest. Strong running from no.8 Mathew Evans and endless support play from ever present open side Nicholas Cudd ensured the home side dominated possession and made it difficult for the visitors to create anything. Special mention should be made of Jamie Cooper who had his best game for the club winning ball on the floor and making good yardage. -- Gwyn |
